A National Mission Trip

About the Author

Ben spends most of his time working with underprivileged kids in Tijuana, Mexico, encouraging them to continue their education. He's an unofficial member of Iglesia Bautista Monte Horeb, which runs the elementary school, Centro Pedagógico Didaque.

On Tuesday nights in college I went to a weekly worship service at a Presbyterian church down the street. The Inn, as it’s named, puts together mission trips for Spring Break. Since April has come to a close, I decided to check out their website (www.theinnministries.org) to see where they went. Four out of the five trips were within the U.S. National mission trips! Ministry to one’s own countrymen. An outreach within. Kind of surprising.

One of my statistics-happy amigos told me that the U.S. is one of the least evangelized countries in the world. Kind of ironic since for my whole life I’ve heard that the U.S. sends out more missionaries than any other country in the world.

According to Patrick Johnstone and Jason Mandryk in their book Operation World, almost 85 percent of the U.S. claims to be Christian. However, aside from the fact that this claim is grossly inflated, there are large groups of unreached peoples within the United States who do not make this claim. They outline six distinct groups:

  1. 5.4 million Jews—“the largest concentration of Jews in the world”
  2. Sects—Mormonism, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and the like (2,500 in total)
  3. Muslims—“nearly 8 million with more than 1,500 mosques”
  4. South Asians—quite wealthy with few Christians
  5. Prison Population—1.8 million in jail

Good for The Inn for addressing the need. May there be more national mission trips—in every country.

    Hello Ben,
My name is Lisa Schwank and I am on staff at the INN university ministries in Bellingham, Washington. I’m not sure if we are the “INN” you are speaking of, the web address on this page takes me to a different “INN” (in NY)…but how you speak of the INN makes me wonder, anyway…
A current INN student sent me this link and told me I should read it, feeling that it may encourage me as the Mission’s Coordinator here at the INN.
So, I just wanted to say hello and ask if perhaps we are the INN you are speaking of…and also wondering when you were a student with us.
Thank you for your kind words.

Hello Lisa Schwank! Thanks for the edit! Yes, it is you, and I’ve made the change to http://www.theinnministries.org.

And I know who you are! We’ve got a mutual amigo (who I’ll keep anonymous) currently studying in Edinburgh.

Keep up the good work as The Inn’s Mission’s Coordinator.

    Ben

  3. Group Travel Scoop Says:

Not to mention that travel is easier and more accessible within the U.S. It allows opportunities that are within the reach of most people and small groups who are looking to do something but don’t have the time/money to travel to foreign countries. It seems there is plenty to do at home for missionaries…
